Dear Prudence, Won’t you Come Out to Play?

Chad writes,

“I find it interesting that you want to lay out a bunch of personal attacks at a group of bloggers in the same post you write about "what is important".

No one is out to get Senator Thune. His politics is something a lot of South Dakotans happen to disagree with. Why is everyone so surprised that a group of politically active Democrats are criticizing him? We're in the fricking minority party -- we need to push back.

Are we supposed to just roll over and play dead? Would that make you happy?

That isn't going to happen.”

Yes, I did it, and I regret it. I really do. I am just not ready to say I am sorry.

This is disappointing. I didn’t want to stoop to such a level when I started my blog. Yet I am not at point where I feel ready to apologize to anyone, at least right now. What I did and how I expressed myself is not much different than what I have read on many of the blogs over and over again.

This is an observation, not an excuse.

Such comments are tedious and only provoke the most negative and violent emotions toward those with who we disagree (take my previous post and/or your own comments in reaction to it as an example.)

Yep, I got pulled into the muck. I am not proud of it and I should have avoided it. I feel dirty. Now all I want is to stand under the shower and scrub and rinse off all of this slimy, smelly stuff.

So I am ready to move forward. Maybe we can together. I certainly don’t want anyone to “roll over and die.”

What I would like is a more honest discussion of the issues along with some discussion about possible alternative solutions. And an obvious yet unwritten rule guiding this kind of discussion is that there is no room for personal attacks. Such discussions take us off topic and don’t resolve any problems.

How about you? I may have missed something and I hope you won’t hesitate to tell me. I think a thorough and honest discussion of the issues would be refreshing.

I am starting to feel somewhat better. I might be ready to apologize later.

Gabe,

No apology needed. Seriously.

I have made a conscious decision to stick to the issues and not issue personal attacks on my own site from this point forward. Some of the things discussed in this past Sunday's sermon helped me reach this conclusion, which I obviously know is the correct course of action.

I know I've been guilty of some personal attacks and in most cases it has done very little to help my cause(s)

That doesn't mean I'm not going to call out Thune and Rounds and other Republicans (and even Democrats) when I see something that I think is wrong.

But launching personal attacks at individuals (especially other bloggers who are just trying to do the same thing I am albeit from a different political stance) is something I have no interest in.

I agree when you say:

"I think a thorough and honest discussion of the issues would be refreshing".

I for one, know such discussions are what first brought me to the SD blogosphere and it is what truly motivates me to write when I wake up in the early morning.

There can be not doubt that we are going to disagree on many issues, but that doesn't mean we have to personally have it in for eachother.

Chad,

I'm sorry I acted like such an ass (no pun intended).

I too don't mind we don't agree, I do mind when we can't get along.

So what's your take on communities who subdize retail development? I will throw up (no pun intended) my thoughts in the next few days.

Gabe,

Frankly, I'm not a big fan of communities that subsidize retail development.

I'm not entirely sure why, but for me it smacks of desperation. If a retail company wants to open up shop in a community, they are going to come no matter what. They are going to open up shop where their customers live.

When communities are willing to shell out tax breaks and other subsidies to retailers, all they are doing is bringing in low paying jobs. Those tax breaks and subsidies would seem to be better spent on recruiting companies who are willing to make a real investment in the community by rewarding their employees with decent wages and benefits.

Just my initial thoughts.

Gabe, just a couple of observations and question about what exactly you regret?

I find it interesting that Chad has felt the need to chastize you for giving your opinion without checking with him first. I also found it interesting that the Sunday sermon he listened to had somewhat of a delayed reaction. You wrote your post on Monday. When did the sermon kick in Chad?
Was it when Gabe "realized his mistake" in giving an honest opinion that once again showed the true blue colors of the Hildebrand style tactics and retreated?

You Boys are unbelievable in your obvious "Mafia Mentality". Gabe is new to blogging and you made sure early on to make it a trial by fire of the Hildebrand Boys.

I for one don't believe one word of Chad's smarmy words regarding how the Sunday sermon impacted on him. That is total b.s. and you know it Chad. Get real for once in your life. You may be able to fool Gabe, but you're not fooling others who are too polite to tell you to your face what a phoney you are.

The only reason you haven't attached the mental insanity labels to Gabe is he has too many credentials to allow that type of discourse.

Do you think for one minute that is going to fly? Next!!!!

Gabe,

No need to apologize. Schuldt laughed his ass off when Jeff Gannon was outed. Don't be conned by his BS.

Sibby's rule number one: Don't play by the Democrat's rules, they don't.

If the whiners can't take what they dish out, then they can just whine about it. Boo Hoo.
